Assessment –  To successfully complete this award, students will be required to pass their learning journal for each day of the programme and a quiz on the content of each module.

Summary

This programme is designed for managers and supervisors to build practical knowledge and skills in the critical area of managing Occupational Safety and Health at work for your area of responsibility.

At the end of the programme participants will:

  • Be able to describe the full extent and importance of their role in managing OSH at work.

  • Identify relevant OSH law and how it impacts their responsibilities.

  • Know how to communicate the OSH message in the organisation and act in the role with greater confidence.

  • Compile suitable OSH documentation and assess the suitability of the organisation’s written Risk Assessments and Safety Statement.

  • Be able to describe the role of an EHS/OSH professional & Safety Representative and how to interact effectively with both.

  • Identify the key tools for managing safely through a practical approach to skills development in areas such as planning and implementing the top priorities to prevent accidents and ill health at work.

  • Gain knowledge to perform a comprehensive risk assessment of common risks and how to investigate accidents thoroughly, ensuring the suitable documentation is produced on each occasion.

  • Know how to monitor and measure OSH performance in their area.

Day 3- Investigating Accidents, Incidents, Risk and Hazards

  • Risks, loss and causality
  • Risk assessment and risk control techniques
  • Common hazards
  • Safe systems of work and permits to work
  • Accident investigation and reporting

Day 4- Improving the Safety Culture, Role of the HSA, Emergency Planning, Monitoring

  • Role of the Health and Safety Authority
  • Sources of information
  • Work equipment, Display screen equipment, electrical safety
  • Inspections and monitoring
  • Building a safety culture that works
  • Ensuring effective emergency plan delivery

Programme Director

Darrell Fernandes

A qualified electrician and electronics service technician, Darrell has extensive knowledge in the areas of Occupational Safety and Health Management, Emergency Management, Crisis Management, Business Impact Analysis, Business Continuity Planning, Management Systems Development, Coaching and Mentoring, Facilitation and Communication Skills.

He also worked as an instructor and member of the Defence Force’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) incident response panel and was a regular contributing columnist for the Health and Safety Review providing expert insight and analysis regarding all aspects of Occupational Safety and Health Management.
